Monday mindset

Success is not obtained overnight. It comes in installments; you get a little bit today, a little bit tomorrow until the whole package is given out. The day you procrastinate, you lose that day’s success.

-Israelmore Ayivor-

I saw this quote today and thought it ideal to start your week with on this Monday morning, especially if you are procrastinating right now!

Have a good one.

Quote: In need of a positive reminder today?

I was just listening to the radio today and this little mantra jumped out at me,

Every winner was a beginner and every master was a disaster

Absolutely no idea who coined it in the first place but I thought what a great Monday morning quote for someone.

Stick it somewhere you can see it and repeat often! x

Find your strengths

You need to find your strengths if you want to successfully design a career around who you are and what you are good at and want to work at.

If you want the perfect fit that is?

If you don’t find those strengths and work with them and end up fighting against them instead and your work life will be one big struggle.

In fact, you might be feeling that in your current employment situation, which is why nothing really feels like the right fit.

You might only be using a couple of strengths but not enough of your talents to make your work enjoyable enough?

And they call her resistance

Words of gratitude

The topic of gratitude, something I thought was absolute nonsense when I used to read about it, but it really plays a powerful part of the process towards whatever you deem as your success.

Just think about it, If you aren’t grateful for what you have already, you can’t appreciate what you will have in the future, can you?

If you dwell on what you don't have then you will get more of it.

You as a sassy, small business ideas genius are not going to be like that are you?

David Bowie said...

Ageing is an extraordinary process where you become the person you should always have been

- David Bowie -

Following your passion may not always be right!

I have a love-hate relationship with the word passion.

It is bandied around as if it is the holy grail of small business ideas and happiness.

It is not! In my humble opinion...!

Passion can be, well like, real-life passion.

It can come to you like a bolt of lightning only to leave you just as quickly and leave you high and dry because you committed your heart to it.

More likely, it might suit you better to be looking for the little slow burner, sitting quietly in the corner waiting for a chance to shine.

Don't rush into passion, rather, walk a little more slowly with your eyes open a little wider and you might have a better chance of finding the love of your life.

In business terms of course....:)

I like Mark Mansons now very famous, very to the point article about passion.

He uses pretty colourful language so if you are easily offended, look away now, but I think you might enjoy reading it.

More about you...

Here are some more questions to ask yourself if you are stuck in the "what business should I start?" mode.

As I keep mentioning here and there,

"Asking the right questions takes as much skill as giving the right answers"

Here are 8 more questions to ask yourself to get closer to your right answers. if you want more of this please beg, steal or borrow a copy of the brilliant book Finding Your Element by the late great Sir Ken Robinson, who sadly recently passed away.

Such a sad loss as he was an advocate in the field of education for schools to move children towards what they are good at rather than just, blindly following a curriculum that rewards only academically gifted and not the practically gifted child.

Anyway, that is another topic for another day...

Here are the questions

  • What sort of activities come naturally to you?
  • What do you feel your natural talents are?
  • How did you first become aware of them?
  • Do you have aptitudes that you have never considered developing?
  • Do you have any talents that you have not developed but wished you had?
  • Do you have any talents that you have been discouraged from developing?
  • In aptitude tests did any results surprise you?
  • Which of your aptitudes do you think you could really develop if you tried?

The question about being discouraged from developing something particularly stands out to me.

So many people are gifted in their early life with a talent their parents don't want them to pursue for any number of reasons.

Could that be where you small business ideas lie?

In there but buried under years of neglect?

Something to think about...

You know you are on the right track when...

You know you are on the right track about who you are and where you want to be when you "feel right" about it

You feel open and free rather than shut down and closed about your decisions.

You can't logic out these things! you need to feel them.

If you are still a bit unsure about who you are or what business you might like to be in, here are a few questions from the downloadable book you can get if you join the mailing list.

111 Self Coaching Questions to Ask Yourself..

They can help stimulate your thinking

  • When you were a child what did you want to be?
  • What did you LOVE to do as a child?
  • I am drawn to?
  • I don't notice time when I am?
  • I am always talking about?
  • I am the real me when I?
  • I could do x y or z for free?
  • In my current life I am always doing?
  • My family/friends love my ability to?
If you keep going, you will find your are "in the business of" something that is just right for you.

As I mention on the site, that great quote from Robert Half

"Asking the right questions takes as much skill as giving the right answers"

Are you asking yourself the right questions to get on your right track?

Who are you?

Another useful question to help find out where you want to go on your self employment journey is to look at who you are.

It helps "you do you" better.

And don't be behind the kitchen door about who you are, you need to step out and put a spotlight on your best bits.

Here is a list to kick off your thoughts...

Are you?

  • entertaining
  • compassionate
  • calm
  • practical
  • adventurous
  • supportive
  • determined
  • direct
  • patient
  • persuasive
  • visionary
  • original
  • gentle
  • and so on

Pick adjectives about who you are and it will go a long way to helping you get clear on any of your small business ideas.

If you don't do what you love, in a way you love to do it, you will be forever wondering why you feel you have a ball on chain on your ankle.

You are seeking flow, not stagnation.

What do you LOVE to do?

You will excel in any small business ideas if "you do you" as they say.

Therefore it makes sense if you choose to "do business" in a way that is so easy, it will be like falling off a log.

This is not a comprehensive list but it will get you kickstarted from zero if you are not sure where to start...

Do you love to?...

  • Listen
  • Talk
  • Teach
  • Write
  • Read
  • Feed
  • Advise & guide (that will be me then :)
  • Problem solve
  • Travel
  • Take photographs
  • Organise
  • Drive
  • Ride
  • Investigate
  • Observe
  • Collect
  • Buy
  • Inspire
  • Change
  • Heal
  • Produce
  • Cook
  • Analyse
  • Negotiate
  • Advocate
  • Repair
  • Build
  • Record
  • Mentor

And so on...

Find verbs that describe you to a tee.

If you are unsure, you now have the beginnings of finding out how you would like to do business

Especially if you find it difficult starting from a completely blank sheet, and asking yourself "what business should I start? and nothing immediately jumps out at you, because you don't have a hobby or skill you would really like to use.

The difference between a strength & a skill

A skill is something you can do and can be learned

A strength is something you are and it is part of your very being

I don't know about you but I used to get these 2 mixed up on a regular basis.

It is important to understand the difference because building your work around your strengths will have a lot more sustainability than purely using your skills.

You can learn a new skill any time you like, but your strengths are innate, you can't avoid them, they are just you!

Are you mistakenly thinking about these things the wrong way round?

To move into self employment, you don't just have to take the route of only what you can do, you can add who you are into the mix as well.

Much more fun!

Are you excited this Monday morning?

Monday morning, and you are not excited about your idea after the weekend?

Then it is not the right idea!

A word about weakness

Something to ponder on for Sunday morning before you begin your week...

"a weakness is a strength in the wrong environment"

Marianne Cantwell

How many times have you been told to try and improve your weak areas?

Must do better in this, or could do better in that! Stop doing the other?

Or do you beat yourself up because you are not much good at this, that or the other and feel as though you should be?

As Marianne tells us, it is not a weakness anyway, whatever your "perceived problem by others or yourself" is, someone else would think it was a strength and love to have you do it, be it or have it.

Example: In the conventional workplace, I used to write long emails, or perceived as long and rambling by my boss.

To me I was writing for clarity, so everyone would know about problem, solution, outcome.

To her, it was a weakness in the workplace because she wanted short and snappy, that was how she was, but now it is a strength in my world of work and helping you get to your self employment idea.

If someone tells you, you are too much of something, employ it somewhere else because it is not weakness, it is your strength utilised in the wrong place.

I feel it is a really important point to grasp, because as a bright, forward thinking individual, topics like this matter.

I don't want you to be discouraged by anything or anyone in these early stages of business idea crystallisation.

I want you to be uplifted and feel fantastic about your gifts.

People will pay for what you are good at, I promise you.

Don't let anyone tell you anything different and try to dim your light.

Have a great Sunday ...

How to ask for what you want

Having recently read a book called *The Aladdin Factor by Jack Canfield & Mark Victor Hansen, I was struck by the topic of asking for something.

It jumped out at me as a perfect topic to bring up for you in your small business ideas pursuit.

If you want to progress into being your own boss you are going to have to ask for things.

It could be any number of things, from any number of different types of people

Ask for help, ask for time off, ask for money, ask for understanding, ask for patience, ask for training... you get the picture!

They offer a lovely way of approaching the subject.

  • Ask as if you expect to get it
  • Ask someone who can give it to you
  • Be clear and specific in your requests
  • Ask with humour and creativity
  • Ask from the heart
  • Be prepared to give something in order to get something
  • Ask repeatedly
  • Be gracious in accepting a "no"

I think asking as if you expect to get it is a good one. Sometimes you have to put your big girl pants on and go for it or forever be left on the starting block.

And asking the right person in the first place will save you from going around in small circles, especially if you are just a bit timid in the beginning. Why put yourself through it more than once?

But that doesn't mean you shouldn't ask repeatedly, just make sure you ask the right person the first time round.

The biggest takeaway though for me, is graciously accepting the "no"

And that quite often the answer may be no, but if you don't ask you don't get do you?

Be brave today and ask for something that you want to help move you forward.

It is time to get serious. You do want to move out of that cubicle, don't you?

(in the spirit of honesty, please note *means it is an affiliate link. I hope as time goes on, you will come to know I don't share just any old rubbish, only stuff I think would be helpful to you and your small business ideas journey)

There is no better reason for doing business

Robert Kennedy

When you create your new working life, make it count for something better in the world. You might not see the relevance, but even if you are selling nuts and bolts, you are helping people move forward with something.

If you frame your business idea as helping make someone's life better, or making the world a better place for the many, it really helps when times are tough and you are wondering what you are doing it all for.

And it becomes particularly helpful if the people in your life are less than positive about your ambitions.. (tip to the wise: don't tell them!)

Frame this quote and hang it on the wall somewhere, keep it on your phone, and post it on your bathroom mirror.

You are adding value, not taking it away.

You are someone special.

The "it" Test

I can't remember where I got this list from but I knew it was a useful one.

Ideal tool for your kit bag if you are stuck right at the beginning of your trip down the "what business should I start" track, and you are struggling for a beginning.

If you can put the word it at the end of the following verbs you can make a business out of it.

  • Teach
  • Make
  • Design
  • Distribute
  • Write
  • Franchise
  • Export
  • Consult About
  • Paint
  • Grow
  • Brew
  • Raise
  • Cook
  • Care for
  • Record
  • Craft
  • Organize
  • Build
  • Decorate
  • Coach
  • Sew
  • Bake
  • Upcycle
  • Rent

An idea might jump out at you immediately if you are lucky, you might be able to pull your jumbled thoughts into a category earlier than you thought.

I hope you find it useful.
